Conversation(less) Hearts

IMG_9333.jpg

These conversation(less) hearts were created for an activity in T's class.  The week of Valentine's Day, they were going to sort conversation hearts by color.  His teacher reached out to me as she didn't want him to be left out.   Highly motivated, I brainstormed, tried and failed a few times and finally came up with this recipe.

I'm really proud of how great these came out!  They are similar to the real thing in texture, and according to my husband (who is a tough critic) taste way better!!!  It is a pretty basic recipe but can be messed up easily with too much moisture.

NOTE:  these take at least 48hrs to dry out so make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you're''re making them for a special occasion.

The What:

The How To:

  1. Measure out the ingredients

  2. Mix together the lard, MCT Powders and sweetener - use your hands, it should form a crumbly mixture

  3. Add HOT water, continue to mix with your hands until a stiff dough is formed, it still might be a little crumbly but should stick together, if it doesn't add a tiny bit of water and continue to mix until it does

  4. Divide mixture into bowls and add food coloring and continue to mix w/ hands until the dough as a uniformed color. (Make sure your hands are VERY dry when handling the dough, even the smallest amount of moisture can mess things up.)

  5. Firmly press a small amount of the dough into the heart molds. Allow them to dry in the molds for 1-2 hours

  6. CAREFULLY remove hearts from molds and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. They will be mushy and difficult to handle but that is OK. They will firm up as they dry.

  7. Allow to dry on sheet for 48hr.

  8. Note:  an alternate method for making the hearts:  roll out the colored dough in between 2 sheets of parchment paper, using a small cookie cutter, cut out the heart.  Allow them to dry out before removing the hearts from the cut dough.  (i think this method would be easier but I didn't have the right size cookie cutter so i used the molds)
